Most of us in Omaha recall the school bus accidents that occurred near the end of last school year. Last April an Omaha school bus accident put 5 people, including one student, in the hospital. The following day, another school bus accident left a school aide injured.

When we get on a city bus, a charter bus, or even when we put our children onto the school bus, we expect it to be a safe journey to the destination. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tells us that “students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely when taking a bus instead of traveling by car.” Unfortunately, bus accidents still happen.

The following are some common causes of bus accidents:

  • Distracted driving on the part of the bus driver or other drivers on the road.
  • Bus driver is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Speeding bus drivers or other unsafe driving behavior.
  • Negligent bus driver behavior, which may include failure to adhere to posted traffic signals and signs, improper passing, or failure to pay attention to other vehicles on the roadway.
  • Inadequate passenger protection.
  • Defective bus equipment: Bus companies are required by law to maintain their buses to specific safety standards. Failing to do so can result in serious accidents and injuries.
